The firm of silver smiths, Reid & Sons, opened in 1788, in Newcastle upon Tyne. They were founded by Christian Ker Reid. They continue to trade today as part of the ‘Goldsmiths Group’.

The most famous creations by the company are the FA Cup, the Rugby League Trophy and Antarctic explorer, Ernest Shackletons Marine Chronometer.

They were awarded a Royal Appointment from Queen Victoria in 1838. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and at the 1962 International Exhibition. Between 1844 and 1898, Reid & Sons sent a number of marine chronometers for trial at Greenwich, coming second in 1844. On other occasions, they came third, which was enough to convince the Admiralty to buy their chronometers.

A timepiece made by them for Newcastle & Berwick Railway is in the collection of the Science Musuem in Lodon, whilst Marine Chronometers are held in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
