Here we have a clean and classic silver open face pocket watch, dating to 1919. It is branded as Nidor, which is a brand of Buser Freres & Cie, Basel. It has a bright white enamel dial with the railroad minute track and Roman numeral hour markers. It has a sunken centre which provides depth. The sub-second dial is also sunken, with the railroad track. The hands are of spade and whip style and are a bright thermally blued tone. The sub-second hand is also original with the oval counterbalance. It has the double hinged back, with the rear having the fish scale engraving and cartouche to the centre. The inside of the case back has British hallmarking from London assay office for silver, dating to 1919. It is also marked with the ‘Nidor’ brand name. It has the makers mark ‘GS’ for George Stockwell, a large importer of Swiss watches. The inner back has the bright polished finish, with matching hallmarking to the inside. The movement is a good quality Swiss lever 15 jewel calibre by Buser. It has the gilt frosted finish to the bridges and the balance is cut and compensated with a Breguet hair spring.
The movement is in good condition, although the service history is unknown. It is keeping time to within +7 seconds variation a day with an amplitude of 275 degrees and a beat error of 0.0 m/s.
A simple open face pocket watch such as this is a welcome addition to any collection.
Pocket watches are a joy to look at, with the larger canvas providing more visible craftmanship. The enamel dial has a beautiful, subtle depth with the sunken central section of the dial and the sunken sub-second register. The Roman numerals are bold and well executed, similar to that of church clocks from the late 1800s. The hands are expertly crafted with beautiful lines, sharp edges and the eye-catching thermally blued tone. When they hands catch the light they become a bright electric blue.
The rear of the case offers a detailed fish scale pattern which waves in the light, appearing like the electrons orbiting an atom.
A reliable and well finished Swiss lever movement has a powerful and audible tick. The bridges are a beautiful canvas for the frosted gilt finish.
Nidor was a brand name trademarked in 1918 by Buser Freres & Cie SA, who were based in Niederdorf in Basel. The company was originally listed in 1916 and became part of Ebauches SA in 1925.
