This is a classic and quality rectangular Art Deco wristwatch from the mid 1920s. It has a well-designed, slightly curved 18ct gold case, with neat floral engraving on the sides. The case is of large proportions, measuring 21mm wide x 35mm in length, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 42mm. The dial is simple but well laid out with large Arabic numerals in an Art Deco font. The watch has it’s original thick cut glass crystal which has bevelled edges that reflect the edge of the numerals in certain lights. The 15 jewel Tavannes movement has been recently serviced. The watch is on a beautiful and comfortable handmade leather strap. This incorporates the 1930s 9ct gold buckle the watch came with.
This is a well-proportioned classic Art Deco style rectangular case. The front of the case is 18ct gold, with the case being slightly curved to fit the wrist. The bezel is bevelled, falling away to the sides of the case. The sides of the case are flat and have a beautiful floral engraving of the era.
The case back is 18ct gold and is hinged. The inside of the case back has English hallmarks for imported 18ct gold, assayed at London assay office. The watch dates to 1925, with the date letter “K”. The watch was imported by George Stockwell. It has the serial numbers 0808445, 22.
The dial is in good original condition. It has a silvered powder base tone which has a good even colour throughout. The dial layout is relatively simple with a central rectangular railroad track. The hour markers are large and clear, having been hand painted. They are neatly laid out, stacked down the sides of the dial, with 12 and 6 O’clock sitting neatly in the middle at the top and bottom.
The hands are original and are of plume style. They are in good condition with no bending and minimal corrosion. They have the original thermally blued finish which has a good shine.
The glass is an original, thick glass. It has a lovely depth to it and has a bevel to the edges. It is nice to see this remain as it’s a beautiful original part of the design from the period.
The crown appears to be original matching the profile of the watch and the size.
The watch is on a custom, handmade strap, incorporating the 9ct gold buckle that came with the watch. It is high quality leather strap, hand stitched, and is extremely comfortable. It will fit up to an 9” wrist.
The 9ct rose gold buckle dates to 1931, having been assayed at Chester assay office.
The movement is a 15-jewel calibre from Tavannes Watch Company. It is marked as originally being adjusted to 6 positions. It is a good quality calibre with a cut compensating balance.
The movement has been recently serviced and is in good condition cosmetically, keeping acceptable time for a watch of this vintage. It has a daily gain of +210 seconds, with an amplitude of 235 degrees and a beat error of 6.8 m/s.
