Here we have a beautiful and uncommon GWR Oak cased Pork Pie style signal box clock with the French 8 day going barrel movement. The rear of the case is stamped with the GWR number 0.188. The silvered dial is engraved ‘GWR’ with the wax fill.

This is an uncommon silver dial variation, with similar GWR clocks normally having porcelain dials. The examples with French movements are superior to the later Smiths powered clocks. It measures 16.5cm x 16.5cm, with a 6cm depth. The dial measures 9.6cm x 9.6cm.

The dial is the rarer silvered variety with the linear brushing to the satin finish. It has the clear railroad track for the minutes, with the roman numeral hour markers. Beneath 12 O’clock is the G.W.R signing which is engraved into the dial with the wax in-fill. The base of the dial is signed ‘Made In France’.

The hands are thermally blued and are of Spade and Diamond style. They have oxidised with age, with the hour hand developing a darker tone, whilst the minute hand retains a brighter blue tone.

The case is cylindrical with the bevelled bezel holding the original glass. The glass is in good condition with the bevelled edge a nice design touch.

The surround is formed of solid Oak and has the original dark brown stained finish. The grain is an eye-catching tiger pattern with dark bands and stripes throughout. It has some nicks to the edge of the cut-out surround where the block meets the wood. To the rear is the original brass hanger which is held in place with two screws.

The rear has the cover is a push fit. It is signed with the G.W.R reference 0.188. It pulls off to reveal the 8-Day going barrel movement. It has the serial number 50002 6 engraved to the movement. It is in good condition and is keeping time to within 5 minutes variation over 8 days.

The clock is completely original.

The movement has been engraved by the previous owner who was given the watch in the 1960s when he retired. It has his post code for his address in Bath.
