Here we have a fascinating Art Deco design of Omega pocket watch, dating to 1923. It comes complete with its original retailer’s box, by Enrique Luiz in Cartagena, Columbia. It has the thin and elegant silver case with the open face design and hinged back. The silver textured sector dial has the slanted Art Deco hour markers with the beautiful thermally blued Omega symbol hands indicating the time. The sub-second dial is well proportioned, with the original lozenge style hand. The bow is neat, with the oval loop and low-profile crown creating a compact look. The case back has a personal engraving to an employee of Scottish origin, from the Delineation of Machines in Cartagena, Columbia. It has the blue enamel company logo above. The case is signed with the Omega logo and serial number. It is powered by the Omega calibre 35.3L movement, which is functioning.

The dial is a lovely Art Deco design with the sector design and slanted flat topped numbers. The creation of sectors with the sunken central section and sub-second adds depth and intrigue to the dial. The outside of the dial has the railroad minute track with the stylised Art Deco Arabic hour markers. The sub-second dial is well-sized with the railroad track and individual second graduations, with 5 second dashes and 10 second Arabic markings. Below 12, the dial is signed with the Omega logo and name.

The hands are an exceptional and rarely seen design of the period, with the Omega symbol skeletonised to the tip. The sub-second hand is also eye-catching with the tapered Lozenge design. The hands are thermally blued, which has developed a purple hue.

The case is slim and elegant, fitting with the Art Deco design. It is a slightly more compact pocket watch with a case measurement of 47.5mm x 47.5mm with the total length including loop of 60.5mm. It has a slim depth of 10mm. It is an open face design with the snap-on bezel and hinged case back. It is formed of 0.935 Swiss silver and has the polished finish. To the rear it has a presentation inscription in Spanish ‘A.D.E Mc. Gregor, Sus jefes y companeros, Delineacion de maquinas, S.E. de C.N. Cartagena 1927’. This translates to: ‘A.D.E Mc. Gregor, Your bosses and colleagues. Delineation of machines. S.E. by C.N. Cartagena 1927’. It has the blue enamel company logo too, which is a nice touch. Inside it is signed with the Swiss silver hallmarking and has the serial number dating to 1923.

The movement is an Omega calibre 35.3L, dating to 1916. It is stem wind and set and has a jewel count of 15. It has a beat rate of 18,000 BPH. It also has a cut and compensated balance with Breguet hairspring. The movement service history is unknown. It is keeping time to within 2 minutes variation a day with an amplitude of 275 degrees and a beat error of 0.6 m/s.

The pocket watch comes in its original fitted box. The box is signed with the retailer name and details in Spanish – ‘El Ancora de oro de Enrique Ruiz, Reiojeria, Optica Plateria, San Miguel, 1. Cartagena’. This translates to: ‘The Golden Anchor of Enrique Ruiz, jewelry, Optics, Silver, San Miguel, 1. Cartagena’.

There is a lot to like here when you combine the condition, original box, Art Deco styling, Columbian retail and presentation and most importantly, those super cool Omega logo hands.
