Here we have a lovely example of a well sized 1924 Silver full hunter trench watch. It has an uncommon full hunter front cover which is released via a push button at 6 O’clock. It has a sprung hinge which helps it pop up, to expose the dial. It has a classic white enamel dial, with the Radium luminous Arabic numerals. It has thermally blued Cathedral hands and a sub-second dial. The onion crown is a beautiful design. The rear has a screw back which has British Silver hallmarking to 1924 inside. The movement is a manual wind Fontainmelon calibre. It has been recently serviced and is keeping very accurate time. It has the initials ‘AGR’ which is the makers mark for Arthur George Rendell. He was an importer of good quality Swiss watches based on Clerkenwell Road in London.
The dial is a clean and crisp white enamel. It has the classic railroad track, with arabic numerals with standout out red 12. They are filled with radium luminous which has aged to a pumkin tone. The sub-second dial is inset and has a clear track with 10 second arabic graduations and single second markers. The lollipop counterbalance hand is original and is thermally blued. The Cathedral style hands are also thermally blued, shinning in the light. The radium lume matches the numerals with its rich pumpkin tone.
The sterling silver case is a large size for the period, measuring 35mm x 35mm. It has a lug-to-lug length just shy of 40mm with a slim depth of under 10mm. It also has the benefit of a larger lug width of 14mm. Normally such trench watches look more feminine due to the thin strap width, unless they are on a military style bund strap. This however will take a well sized strap for fixed lugs.
The watch is of full hunter configuration. The front cover was originally designed to protect the watch dial and glass from damage/impact during usage. There is a push button at 6 O’clock which releases the cover, with the sprung hinge powering it upwards. It opens to a 45-degree angle, unless the wrist is slightly angled down. This is due to wear with age.
Underneath there is a polished bezel surrounding the dial and holding the crystal. The centre section of the case has the silver wire lugs attached. They are stury and thick, with the bottom lug being slightly bent. The sides of the case are polished and have a subtle curvature.
The coin edge screw on back still has the coin edge design visible, with some wear. It screws down tightly providing a seal from moisture. Inside it has perlage finishing and British hallmarking from Glasgow assay office. The date letter dates the watch to 1924. It has the initials ‘AGR’ which is the makers mark for Arthur George Rendell.
Inside is an early Fontainemelon calibre 7 movement. It is a good quality 17 jewel manual wind movement with end stones for the escape wheel pivots. The hands are pin set as is common with early pieces. The movement has been recently serviced and is keeping excellent time to within 10 seconds variation a day.
A very pleasing example of a large watch, with an uncommon full hunter cover.
