Here we have a circa 1935 Longines watch, which was retailed by JW Benson of London. The retailer signing has worn below 12 and is faintly visible. The silver dial has aged to a darker tone, with clear Arabic numerals, railroad track, in-set sub-second dial and Longines name. The case is a less common full Stainless-Steel example, with unusual, elongated block lugs. The case is designed with a cut recess for the crown. It measures a neat 32mm across. It has the snap on back to the rear, with the Longines calibre 12.68Z movement inside. It is keeping time to within +50 seconds a day.
The dial has an even darkened tone, from its original light silver. It has a lovely, bold font of Arabic numerals, with the railroad track around the exterior. The sub-second dial is inset, with clear 10 second Arabic markers and single second graduations. The Longines name is positioned above the sub-second dial, as was usual in the UK market, with the retailer wanting to take centre stage. The ‘JW Benson London’ signing is rubbed and faint. This has likely worn differently due to the stamping being carried out in a slightly different method, once the watch was with JW Benson. It is a pleasing dial layout which has a nicely aged appearance.
The Cathedral style hands are a classic design of the period. They are thermally blued, which still has a bright tone that shines in the light. The sub-second hand is also thermally blued and is pleasantly designed with a subtle taper and oval counterbalance.
The case is formed of full Stainless Steel which was still slightly more uncommon during the period due to the cost and complexity of machining. It was always an indicator of a high-quality watch in the 1930s. The case measures 32mm wide x 32mm in length. The elongated block cut out lugs add to the presence on the wrist with a total measurement of nearly 41mm. This creates an impactful piece of design which spans the wrist well.
It is a nicely designed case, with the thin flat edge of the bezel surrounding the crystal before the bezel bevels to meet the flat, circular main section of the case. The use of a flat block design to the lugs adds complexity to the depth and finishes of the watch. The brushed finish to the top of the lugs helps differentiate the surfaces. The lugs gently flow downwards to help the watch fit the wrist neatly. The sides of the case are flat with polished finishing, with a neat recess for the crown to sit within.
To the rear there is the snap-on case back which fits tightly. Inside it has perlage finishing and is marker as Stainless Steel. The serial number on the inside, matches that of the movement.
The movement is a Longines calibre 12.68z. It has the classic gilt finishing for the period which is a bright tone. It is a 15-jewel manual wind movement of good quality. It is keeping time to within +50 seconds a day.
Overall, this is a very nice piece of design from Longines, in a quality Stainless Steel case, with a standout lug design.
