The Plume style hour and minute hands are thermally blued and shine brightly in the light. Inside is the Omega calibre T17 manual wind movement with the 60-hour power reserve. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
The most famous Art Deco models from Omega during the 1930s contained the T17 movement. The ingenious case designs protected watches from moisture/dust, whilst offering the durability of the full steel construction. The rectangular and tank watches in this period came in various styles of dial and case which provide great variety for the collector, making them a staple of a vintage Omega collection. Inside, the T17 movement was a brilliant innovation. Contained within a tight movement cover, the T17 is an advanced calibre with its barrel shape, low profile and oversized barrel, allowing a mainspring which offers 60 hours power reserve.
This example:
The dial is a clean and classic design with the rectangular railroad seconds track. It has a grey in-fill which creates a nice contrast on the dial. The bold black arabic numerals are clear, with a neat font. The sub-second register follows the flow of the case and outer railroad track. It has individual second graduations and 10 second arabic markers. Below 12 O’clock the Omega logo and signing have worn with age, often due to imperfections in the quality of the original stamp. The dial has darkened from the original silver tone and has the subtle satin brushed finish.
The plume style hands are original and are thermally blued, with the bright tone catching the light nicely. The sword style sub-second hand is also original in the same bright tone.
The case of the CK966 is well proportioned, measuring 22mm wide, with a length of just under 30mm. With the lug-to-lug length of 37.75mm, it has a good presence on the wrist. It is a sleek wear with its downward turned lugs and slim depth of 9mm.
It is a beautiful piece of design with the facetted front. It has the flat centre section to the top and bottom which angles down towards the wrist. Either side has the facetted finish which creates an array of faces to interact with the light. There is an outer thin band which follows the flow of the case, adding a further angular approach, ending in the thin drilled lug design. There is a neat cut out to the right-hand side of the case which recesses the crown.
The rear of the case snaps into place and is a good, tight fit, with the polished finish to the rear. Inside it has the perlage finishing and is signed ‘Acier Staybrite’ with the Omega logo and the serial number which dates it to 1935.
The movement is protected by the original movement cover, which has a window for regulation and another for the screw to release the crown and stem.
Inside you will find the Omega T17 calibre, a famous and well-built movement with a cult following. It is manually wound and has a jewel count of 15 and a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It benefits from a cut compensated balance with Breguet hairspring and a long power reserve of 60 hours. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within +10 seconds a day. It has an amplitude of 240 degrees and a beat error of 1.2 m/s.
The watch is presented a period Gay Frères Stainless Steel Bamboo bracelet which fits an 18mm lug width. It is a stylish bracelet which fits the watch well. It is long and will fit any wrist size.
