Here we have a good original example of a classic 1940s central second tool watch by Glycine. It is in a full Stainless-Steel case measuring 31mm across with the water-resistant screw back. It has a silver satin tone dial which is lightly patinated. It has a clear second’s track with 1/5th of a second graduations for precise timing. Inside are the clear luminous Arabic numerals. A classic uncluttered design, it is signed below 12 ‘Glycine Bienne Geneve’.

It has a thin flat bezel, with bevelled fall away. The lugs are curved downwards to hug the wrist. The sides are flat with the brushed finish, with the screw back to the rear. It is signed with the serial number ‘64080’ with the watches properties ‘Stainless Steel, Waterproof, Anti-magnetic, Incabloc. The inside of the case back has perlage finishing and original lead seal.

The movement is a manual wind Glycine calibre 72 movement. It is a good quality movement with a jewel count of 17 and Incabloc shock protection.

The watch is presented on a period 16mm Bonklip Stainless Steel bracelet.

Overall, this is a good original example, which would make an excellent addition to any collection. A true tool watch, with shockproofing, this can still be a sturdy companion.

Glycine watch company:

In 1914, Eugene Meylan established his watch company La Glycine in Biel/Bienne. Two years later, watchmakers Piccola and Joffrette became co-owners of the company, with it becoming Fabrique d’Horlogerie La Clycine, Piccola et Joffrette.

Their early production mostly concerned pocket watches and ladies watches.

The company gained early praise for the design of their movements, with parts commonality meaning watches could be serviced more easily than the competition.

In 1922, the company and its factory were sold to Ferdinand Engel and watchmaker George Flury and was renamed Fabrique d’Horlogerie La Clycine.

In the early 1930s Glycines former owner Meylan, began working on his own self-winding movement, forming the company Automatic E.M.S.A. He applied for a series of patents in 1930 and later that year, Clycine, in collaboration with Meylans company, manufactured the first mass produced automatic watches.

In 1942 Cyclines In-house movement was acquired by ASUAG (Later known as Swatch group), an entity created by the Swiss government during the great depression, to preserve Swiss watchmaking.

Glycine received an order during World War II for the Germany army for its land forces. They complied and its watches were issued to the Wehrmacht.

A particularly well-known model by Glycine was the Airman, which debuted in 1953. It was designed for the U.S. Air Force and was made available at exchange stores and military bases.

This firmly established the brand as a choice for those wanting rugged and reliable watches for tool purposes.
