Here we have a beautiful piece of 1940s design. This Pierce watch has a rare Blue two-tone sector dial, with gold tone Bauhaus style numerals. The watch is in near new old stock condition, with light markings from storage. The dial has some scratching as it was stored for many years without the glass. It comes on the original strap, which is stitched on.
The case is chrome plated to the front, with a stainless-steel snap on back. It is neatly proportioned, measuring 33.5mm x 33.5mm. It has the polished finish to the bezel and lugs, with a brushed finish to the side of the lugs. The lugs are fixed bar, requiring an open-ended strap. Inside is the 15 jewel manual wind Pierce calibre 103, which has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
There are many pleasing design touches to this piece, but the most exciting is the dial. Blue tones are very uncommon on dials in the 1930s and 40s. This has the most beautiful deep blue with the satin shine finish. In the light it has a beautiful shine. The outer chapter has the stylised Bauhaus style arabic numerals, which have a radial spread around the dial. These are in a rich gold tone. The exterior of the dial is a black tone with the gold tone minute track. The internal sector is surrounded with a gold line and is a black tone. It has the Pierce signing to the centre in gold, with the in-set sub-second dial sat towards its lower end. This has the grained concentric circle design, with the sunburst finish which catches the light. The gold tone hour and minute hands are of a thin stick style, with the sub-second hand having the matching tone with the lollipop counterbalance.
The case is well proportioned, measuring 33.5mm x 33.5mm. It has more presence on the wrist with the lug-to-lug measurement of 40.5mm. It is a comfortable wear on the wrist with a depth of just under 10mm. The front section of the case is chrome plated, with the snap on back being Stainless Steel. The bezel has a polished finish, as does the top of the lugs and the sides of the case. The lugs have a brushed finish to the side, which catches the eye. The lugs are thin but impactful with the dog leg downturned design. This is particularly visible from the sides. The bezel takes up minimal space and combined with the thin lugs and flat sides, this allows the dial to take centre stage. To the right is the thin crown with the neat coin edge finish. The case back has the circular brushed sunburst finish and is signed as being made of Stainless Steel.
Inside is the reliable Pierce calibre 103. It is a manual wind movement, which has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within +20 seconds a day. It has a good amplitude of 270 degrees. Aesthetically, it is a pleasing movement with the Geneve stripe finishing and the chatons surrounding the jewels.
The watch comes on its original stitched leather strap which has the stitched original buckle which has a nice angular design in line with the lug design.
