Here we have a good original example of a 1944 Omega Bumper automatic reference 2374/2.

The model was introduced in the early 1940s and at the time it had the flattest self-winding movement ever produced. This reference is particularly desirable due to the movement calibre and its impressive 35mm case design. It also has an eye-catching font of Art Deco stylised Arabic numerals, providing a very clean and balanced design.

It has a 35mm Stainless Steel case with the stylised sculpted lugs. The silver sector dial has the stylised Art Deco numerals with the radium luminous in-fill. There is a central minute track with the sub-second above 6. It is signed with the Omega logo below 12 with the automatic signing. To the right is the domed Omega crown. The rear has the brushed finish with the retainer ring. The bumper automatic Omega calibre 30.10 R.A is in good condition, keeping reliable time.

The dial is such a clean and balanced design. It is a silver base tone with the outer hour chapter with the black outline and radium luminous in-fill. The numerals are of an Italic stylised Art Deco script, which is an enjoyable aspect of this reference. The radium luminous in-fill adds texture and has aged to a darkened tone. There is a central railroad minute track which contributes to the sector design of the dial. It has the Omega Automatic signing below 12, with the inset sub-second dial above 6 O’clock. It is a well sized sub-second which balances neatly with the centralised minute track and outer hour chapter. It has a circular textured finish, with the individual second dashes and the larger 5 second dashes.

The hour and minute hand are of luminous syringe style in a silver tone. The luminous in-fill has aged to a pumpkin tone and is intact. The tapered sub-second hand is original, also in a silver tone.

The full Stainless Steel case is very well-proportioned measuring 35mm x 35mm. Including lugs it has a 42.5mm length which makes it very wearable by modern standards. It has the polished bezel with the notched sculpted lugs which add flair the case. To the right is the domed Omega crown which is original. The sides are flat with the brushed finish, with the lugs swooping downwards to fit the wrist neatly. There is a more pronounced brushed finish to the lugs, which provide the perfect canvas for it. The drilled lugs allow easy strap change and they are well formed, with little wear. To the rear is the solid piece case back which is held in place by the outer retaining ring. The face has the brushed finish matching the sides and the rear of the lugs. Inside it is signed as patented and being formed of Stainless Steel. It is signed with the reference 2374/2.

Inside is the Omega calibre 30.10 R.A. It is a 17 jewel bumper automatic calibre, which has a beat rate of 19,800 BPH. It has the classic rose gold tone finish from Omegas of the period, which is good and bright.

The bumper automatic movement is a joy on the wrist, with the ability to feel the audible bump as it bounces off of the springs.

The movement service history is unknown but it is in good condition and is reliable. It’s keeping time to within -20 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 230 degrees and a beat error of 1.0m/s.
