I have always had a soft spot for Record watches of the 1940s and 1950s. The 9ct gold tank watch sold in the UK market, as well as this 9ct cushion case, are very well designed and represent great value for money.
The case is mid-size, measuring 28.5mm x 28.5mm with a lug-to-lug measurement of 33mm. This wears well on the wrist as is often the case with a cushion case. The bracelet also integrates well with the watch. It has a period 1950s expanding bracelet, made by Excalibur. It is known as the model 50 with the patent 860662. The watches dial is of sector style with a silvered inner tone and cream outer tone. The hands have a beautiful thermally blued tone. The movement is of good quality and has been recently serviced.
The case front is 9ct gold and is a push fit onto the main body of the case. It holds the crystal and is in good condition with a polished finish. There is light surface scratching on the case but no denting. The main body of the case also has a polished finish and is in very good condition. The lugs are built into the centre section of the case.
This is a very neat and well-designed cushion case.
The case back is 9ct gold and is snap on. The inside of the case back has English hallmarks for 9ct gold, assayed at London assay office. The watch dates to 1955, with the date letter “U”.
The dial is in good original condition. It has a cream base tone, with an inner silvered tone. It is of sector style with this two-tone finish. The dial has minute markers graduated around the outside, with thicker markers for the hours. The Arabic numerals represent the hours and are very clear. The sub-second dial is inset and has a circular grained finish, with markers for 5 second graduations. The dial is signed Record with the Swan logo at 12 O’clock and Swiss Made at 6 O’clock.
The hands are original and are in good condition with no bending and minimal corrosion. They have the original thermally blued finish which has an excellent shine. They are beautifully designed and make this watch stand out.
The crystal is a plexiglass replacement which fits the profile of the watch very well. It is in perfect condition with no scratches.
The watch is on a 1950s expanding bracelet. The bracelet is made by Excalibur and is a model 50. It has the patent 860662. It’s in good condition and it suits the watch very well.
The movement is a calibre 107, 15 jewel Swiss lever movement by Record. It has been recently serviced and is in good condition cosmetically, keeping very good time for its age. It has a daily gain of -4 seconds, with an amplitude of 332 degrees and a beat error of 1.8 m/s.
