Here we have a beautiful, near new old stock example of a 1950s Dowel De Luxe. It is a well-proportioned watch for the era with a 35mm chrome plated case, with the stainless back. The silver dial has the two-tone finish with the satin shine outer sector and matte finish to the inner section. The raised gold tone hour markers alternate between dashes and Arabic numerals. The seconds track is around the exterior of the inner section, with the shorter central second hand. The hands are a rich gold tone with the eyecatching design. The case has the chrome finish, with the domed crown to the right. The Steel snap on back has the brushed finish. Inside is the Rotary calibre 725 which is an ETA 1080. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within +/- 5 seconds a day.
The dial has a beautifully balanced layout, with use of two-tone finishing. The dial is split into an outer sector with the hour markers and the inner section with the seconds track. The outer sector is a silver tone with a satin shine which catches the light. The gold tone hour markers are raised and have a rich yellow gold tone. The inner track has the matte finish which is also silver. The accurate seconds track has graduations of 1/5th of a second. The dial is signed below 12 ‘Dowel De Luxe’. It is marked above 6 O’clock ‘Antimagnetic 17 jewels U.M.’. The hour and minute hand are also of a rich yellow gold tone. They have an unusual rocket-esq design of which we haven’t seen before!
The case is well proportioned for the era, measuring 35mm x 35mm. It has a lug-to-lug measurement of 43.75mm which further adds to the presence. It is a comfortable wear with a depth of just below 10mm including the crystal. It is a chrome plated case which has the mirror polished shine. The bezel has a dished design with the thin flat notch surrounding the dial, before it falls away to meet the centre of the case. The lugs are impactful with the clear separation between them and the circular centre. The notch allows them to stand out, along with the curved bevelled finish which catches the light. The side view of the lugs reveals the complexity of the design with the downward curvature with the flat block bottom. The sides of the case are flat and led smoothly into the snap-on case back. The Steel case back is balanced with the design of the bezel, having the bevelled dish. The circular face has the brushed finish and inside it has the bevelled finish.
The watch is powered by the Rotary 725 which is an ETA 1080. It is a manual wind movement, with a jewel count of 17. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to +/- 5 seconds a day.
The fantastic condition, subtle design touches, well sized case and quality serviced ETA movement make this a really enjoyable 1950s watch.
