Here we have a 1950s Miramar Geneve Bidynator automatic watch. It has a 32mm gold plated case, with a stainless-steel screw back. It has an aged white dial, with applied Arabic and dot hour markers with aged luminous paint. The Lozenge style hands are eye-catching, as is the red pointer central second hand. Inside is the Felsa Bidynator calibre 690 movement, which is in great condition, keeping accurate time.
Miramar Watch Company:
Miramar was a trademark of Fabrique d’Horlogerie Miramar (Miramar SA), in Geneva, Switzerland. The company was founded in 1950 and seemed to fizzle out in the 1980s, one casualty amongst many during the Quartz crisis.
This example:
The dial is a nice piece of design with the applied hour markers. The mix of stylised Arabic numerals, with the swooping design at 4 O’clock and the large dot markers in-between, makes for an eye-catching layout. It is signed with the Miramar Geneve logo, proudly stating its properties. It has 17 jewels, is automatic, with shock protection, waterproof features and anti-magnetic properties. ‘Automatic’ and ‘Incabloc’ are signed in red, which adds a nice pop of colour. The Lozenge handset has the original radium luminous in-fill. The hands are a nice design which adds to the look of the watch. This is further complimented by the red arrow pointer central second hand. This is a watch designed for accuracy, with the 1/5th of a second graduations.
The gold-plated case measures 32mm x 32mm, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 40mm. As with most watches in this period, the lug length adds to the cases overall presence. It has a larger circular bezel design which angles downwards to blend with the rest of the case. The lugs are a thin tapered design, with a curve towards the tip. To the right is the original crown.
The sides have a notched line, following into the lugs, before the case becomes more compact, to meet the case back. The screw back is steel, with clear engraving and the brushed finish.
Inside is the Felsa Bidynator calibre 690 movement. The Bidynator was the first mass produced bi-directional automatic movement and is a high-quality movement. It benefits from detached manual wind and has a sweep centre second, with a jewel count of 17. It has a frequency of 18,000 BPH and a 40-hour power reserve. It also benefits from shock protection. It keeps time to +10 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 280 degrees and a beat error of 0.1m/s.
A neat and charming mid-century design with a high-quality automatic movement.
