For sale we have a beautiful new old stock example of a 1950s Movado dress watch. It comes in its original box, with its hang tag. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within 17 seconds a day.
This watch has many subtle features of quality design. Firstly, the case is well proportioned at 35mm x 35mm, with a shallow depth of 7.5mm. This slim case is very comfortable on the wrist, whilst maintaining a strong presence.
The case has a stepped finish, being shaped like a saucer or UFO, which is a signifier of its mid-century modern design ques. The crown is recessed into the side of the case which ensures the clean circular lines are maintained. The crown itself is rose gold in tone, which ties in nicely with the tone of the hands and hour markers.
The dial is very nicely designed, with a silver satin base tone. Contrasting against are the rose gold tone applied arrow hour markers. These are complimented by the smaller applied dot markers for the minutes. The sub-second dial is a simple crosshair. The facetted Dauphine style hands are clean and elegant.
The case back is stainless steel and has its neatly grained finish. The movement is a Movado calibre 205, which is manual wind, with a jewel count of 17 and Incabloc shock protection. It operates at a frequency of 18,000. The movement has been serviced and is in excellent condition. It has a daily loss of -17 seconds, with an amplitude of 280 degrees and a beat error of 0.8 m/s.
