For sale we have a circa 1953 IWC 18ct rose gold tone dress watch. It has a large case diameter of 36mm x 36mm, with excellent horn style lugs. The case is a Charles Dubois case of beautiful design. The silver dial is a well-executed restoration, with original rose gold tone minute plots and hour markers. The rose gold tone Lance Alpha hands are original. The case has Swiss hallmarking for 18ct gold. Inside is the iconic IWC cal 89 movement, with shock protection. An excellent dress watch with a charming case design, of a larger size.
The case measures a pleasing 36mm x 36mm, with a large lug-to-lug measurement of 45mm. It is a lovely tone of 18ct rose gold and has a polished finish with a good shine to the top. It has a brushed finish to the case sides which is original. The horn lug design is neat, with thin lugs and a bevelled line added depth and texture to them. The snap on bezel has a flat face holding the crystal, which falls away to the flat case sides. To the right is the original crown with a beautiful coin edge finish.
The case back is snap on and is shallow, contributing to the thin profile of the watch. Inside it has Swiss hallmarking for 18ct gold with head of Helvetia mark. It also has IWC signing and the Poincon De maitre 170, which shows the case was made by Cedex, Charles Dubois SA. They were an excellent case maker, who made unique designs for brands such as Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.
The dial is a well-executed restoration with the original rose gold patinated hour markers and minute markers. It has a satin shine with well executed and correct IWC font below 12. The rose gold tone Lance-Alpha hands indicate the time, with a sweeping central second hand.
Inside of the case is the iconic Cal 89 manual wind movement. It has a sweep second and no hacking. It has jewel count of 17, with Incabloc shock protection and operates at a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It functions excellently, keeping time to within +10 seconds a day.
This is a standout dress watch by IWC, of larger proportions for the period, with a high grade movement and an 18ct rose gold case manufactured by a great Swiss case maker. It speaks for itself.

Dial:
The dial is in good condition. It is a well-executed restored dial, with the original markers. The font is good and well executed.
Hands:
The hands are original and are of Lance Alpha style. They are in average condition with no bending but some change in the rose gold tone to silver.
Glass:
The acrylic crystal is a replacement and is in good condition with only light marking.
Crown:
The crown is original with a neat coin edge finish.
Case:
The case is formed of 18ct rose gold and is in good condition with surface scratching. It has a polished finish with a good shine to the top. It has a brushed finish to the case sides which is original.
Caseback:
The case back is 18ct rose gold and is in average condition with a polished finish and light surface scratching associated with ageing. It has some marking which appears to have come from the watch being on a single piece strap.
Strap:
The watch comes on black leather 18mm strap. The it is not IWC and the buckle isn’t IWC.
Movement:
The movement is a Cal 89 manual wind with sweep second and no hacking. It has 17 jewels, with Incabloc shock protection and operates at a frequency of 18,000 BPH.
The movement has been serviced. It keeps time to within +10 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 350 and a beat error of 0.3 m/s.
