For sale we have a pleasing example of a 1954 Smiths De Luxe model A222, with flared lug design and Dennison case. It has a chrome centre with stainless steel bezel and snap on back. It has a bright white dial with inset sub-second dial and applied silver Arabic hour markers. Inside is a calibre 400 movement which is keeping reliable time.
This is a lovely example of a mid 1950s English made Smiths watch, with the charm of the flared lug design and the bright white dial with applied silver hour markers.
The case is Dennison made. It measures 31mm x 31mm and is a neat design with the flared lugs adding to the case presence and wearability at 38.5mm long. The chrome is very good with no wear, which is unusual for the age and makes this a good example. The crown is original, of Stainless Steel with coin edge and neat dimpled design.
The dial appears to be a high-grade restoration. It is eye-catching with its bright white matte finish and raised hour markers. The sub-second dial is inset and has textured concentric circles. There are clear Arabic numerals for the hour markers, with the Signing Smiths De Luxe with the cornet logo. It is also signed 15 jewels and Made in England. The silver Sword style hands indicate the time and have a bright finish. The sub-second hand is also original with neat lollipop counterbalance.
The movement is a cal 400. It has a jewel count of 15 and a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It has the classic gilt finish. It is keeping time to within +40 seconds a day.

Dial:
The dial appears to be a very high-grade restoration. It has a matte white base tone which is bright. There is some variation in the finish with a slightly more striped appearance to the left-hand side. It has applied silver hour markers, which shine brightly. The minute track, signing and sub-second track are very clear.
Hands:
The hands are original and are in good condition. They are a bright silver tone with no signs of ageing. The sub-second hand is also original with neat lollipop counterbalance.
Glass:
It is a replacement acrylic crystal which is in good condition with no noticeable marking.
Crown:
The crown is original and is made of Stainless Steel in good condition.
Case:
The case is chrome plated and is in very good condition for the age. It has a polished finish and no visible wear to the chrome. It has some light surface scratches.
Caseback:
The snap-on back is in very good condition. It has brushing to the main face and polished outside. It has some light surface scratching associated with ageing. It fits tightly to the case.
Strap:
The watch is on a new leather strap.
Movement:
The movement is a cal 400. It has a jewel count of 15 and a frequency of 18,000 BPH.
The service history is unknown. The movement is in good condition and is keeping reliable time. It keeps time to within + 40 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 250 and a beat error of 1.6 m/s.
