Here we have an eye-catching 1960s Avia 9ct gold Chronograph. It has a 36mm yellow gold case, of 3-piece construction, with a polished finish. It is signed with Swiss hallmarking for 9ct gold and was manufactured by Jules Blum. It has the Avia signed crown to the left, with the rectangular pushers for the chronograph. The dial is a silver satin tone, with gold tone baton hour markers. It has dished silver sub-dials with a sunburst finish, one for the seconds and one for the 30-minute counter. It has a red Telemetre scale with further blue Tachymeter scale to the exterior. It is powered by the Landeron 149 Chronograph movement, which has been recently serviced and is functioning well.
This is a useful companion with the Telemeter allowing the user to measure the approximate distance from an event that can be seen, or heard, such as a firework or bolt of lightning/thunder. The Tachymetre scale allows for the approximate speed of a vehicle over a known distance.
The dial is a silver satin base tone with gold accents provided by the applied baton hour markers. It is a classic layout with the two sub dials, consisting of the constant seconds at 9 O’clock and the 30-minute counter at 3 O’clock. The sub-dials are sunk into the dial and have a dished design. They have a bright silver sunburst finish with the grained concentric circles catching the eye. The seconds/minutes track surround the inner section of the dial, with the red Telemetre scale outside of it. There is also the blued Tachymetre scale to the exterior. It is signed ‘Avia 17 jewels’ below 12 O’clock, with the ‘Incabloc’ signing above 6 O’clock.
The case is well proportioned, measuring 36mm x 36mm. It has a long lugs which extend the total length to 44.5mm, adding presence on the wrist. With a 12mm depth, the watch is a snug fit to the wrist. It is a three-piece design, with the snap on bezel holding the crystal, the centre section with the lugs and the snap on case back. It is formed of 9ct yellow gold and has the polished bevelled bezel design, which falls to meet the main body of the case. The sides of the case are flat with the polished finish with the long lugs tapering towards the tip. The lugs have a subtle polished bevel to the outside which provides an intriguing transition to the flat polished sides. To the right is the original Avia signed crown, which is sandwiched between the two rectangular Chronograph pushers.
The case back has the dished design with the polished exterior and brushed finish to the face. It is signed with Swiss hallmarking for 9ct gold, with the serial number and hammer 105. The Poincon De Maitre 105 shows the case was manufactured by Les Fils de Jules Blum. They are well known for providing cases to many IWC dress watches with Cal 89 and 83 movements. They specialised in classic dress cases with interesting lug designs.
