Here we have a fun, space age 1968 Omega Seamaster Cosmic with the 33.5mm angular steel case with brushed finishes. It has the original dial with the grey exterior and stepped finish. To the centre it has the satin silver sunburst finish. It is a co-signed variation with the ‘Turler’ name below the Omega signing. It has the applied, bevelled hour markers with the black painted top section and polished bevel. The date window is balanced at 3 O’clock. It has the stick style hands with painted strip and luminous in-fill. To the right is the original Omega signed crown. The case back is solid with the Seamaster signing and hippocampus motif. It is a monocoque design with the movement accessed by removed the crystal and crown. Inside it the Omega calibre 565 automatic movement which is keeping accurate time. It comes on its original ref 1040 No.12 steel bracelet with 539 endlinks. It is a long bracelet which will fit any wrist.
First introduced in 1967 and produced for only a decade, the Seamaster Cosmic is an intriguing retro watch from Omegas catalogue. The irregular, angular cases encapsulate the space race and retro design touches.
The dial is one of the better variations on this reference. It has the grey track with the white dash minute/second markers, which has the bevelled finish, falling away at the edge of the dial. The hour markers are chunky, with the black painted top section and bevelled middle giving way to the polished lower section. The centre of the dial is the silver satin sunburst finish with matches the bezel finish. It has the applied Omega logo, with the ‘Omega’ ‘Automatic’ signing. Below is the ‘Turler’ retailer name which makes this an uncommon co-signed example. Above 6 is the stylised ‘Seamaster’ signing with the ‘Cosmic’ name. To the right is the applied date window surround with polished finish. The date wheel is a white tone with the black arabic numerals. The hands are of stick style with the bevelled centre. They have the black painted strip, tying in with the hour markers, and the luminous in-fill towards the ends. The central second hand is of the classic tapered design.
The case is well proportioned, measuring 33.5mm x 33.5mm. It is also a comfortable wear due to the slim case profile of 10.5mm. The case and lug design feed nicely into the end links and bracelet, creating an integrated design which adds to the impact on the wrist.
The bezel provides a canvas for the satin brushed sunburst finish which dovetails with the dial finish. The lugs are of a cat ear style with the angular, tapered design. These have the brushed finish running in line with the case. The sides of the case are flat with the polished finish. To the right is the original omega signed crown which is well proportioned and easy to use. The case back is solid, with the flat face and bevelled side sections that make the watch comfortable to wear. The main face has the brushed finish with the ‘Seamaster’ signing and the hippocampus motif. The case is a monocoque design, with the crystal being removed, along with the split stem crown, to assess the movement. This is a good waterproof design which makes this a robust watch.
Inside the case is signed with the Omega logo and the reference number 166.022.
The movement is an Omega calibre 565 automatic movement. It has the good rose gold finishing which catches the eye. It has a jewel count of 24 and operates at a slightly higher frequency of 19,800 BPH. It has the quick set date function which is operated by pulling the crown out.
It is presented on its original, reference correct reference 1040 No.12 bracelet, with the angular 539 endlinks which are brand new. It has a 5 piece design with the outer and central pieces in line, with staggered pieces either side. It has the brushed finishing and the original omega signed clasp. It is full length and will fit any wrist size. The links are removable with micro-adjustment on the clasp too.
The watch is modelled on a 7" wrist circumfrence.
