For sale we have a 1970s Garrard 9ct yellow gold dress watch, with a silver sunburst dial. It has a good quality MSR S76 automatic movement calibre, with an unusual date layout at 6 O’clock. The David Shackman and Sons case measures 34mm across, making it a neatly proportioned case. It is a neat case with straight lugs. It is in good condition for its age with light surface scratching to the polished finish on the case. `
The dial is in very good original condition with a silver base tone with a satin sunburst finish. It is a lovely simplistic yet elegant dial. There are simple minute markers around the exterior, with applied baton hour markers with black painted stripes to the centre. It is signed Garrard below 12 O’clock, Automatic below the hands and Swiss Movement below 6 O’clock. The date window is a lovely feature, unusually positioned at 6 O’clock.
The hands are original and are of stick style with a black painted centre. The central second hand is also original.
The circular case is formed of 9ct gold and is in good condition. It has light surface scratching consistent with age. The case has a polished finish. The lugs are thin and are of a straight design. The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is in good condition, with surface scratching consistent with ageing. It has a polished finish. It has the personal engraving: “Imperial Chemical Industries LTD, presented to J.Tickle, 30 years service, 1976”.
Inside it has English hallmarking for 9ct gold from London assay office, with the date letter “B”, dating the watch to 1976. It is signed DS&S which is the makers mark for David Shackman and Sons.
The movement is a MSR S76, which is an improved and decorated ETA 2783.
It has a sweep second hand, date with quickset and hacking. It has 21 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 BPH and a power reserve of 45 hours.
The service history is unknown, however the movement is in good condition keeping very good time. It has a daily gain of +10 seconds, with an amplitude of 260 degrees and a beat error of 0.1m/s.
