The Dunhill Millennium was released in 1982 and represents an exceptional piece of design during an era which offered mixed attempts at pushing the envelope of watch design. This example has a 36mm case which makes it very wearable even by modern standards. This is the largest example of the time only model which makes it desirable. The case is a flying saucer / button shape which is very comfortable to wear and an is an interesting design on the wrist. The lugs are central and have the screwed bar which holds the leather strap. The dial is a bright white tone that shines in the light, with bold Roman Numerals and a date window sat at 6 O’clock, providing great balance to the dial. Inside is a reliable and good quality ETA 955.412 7 jewel Quartz movement.
From a personal perspective, I view Dunhill pieces from this era as exceptional value for money. During this period Dunhill offered high quality watches, with unique designs. The design and case construction and quality are very similar to that of Cartier during the same period. The central T bar lug is similar to that of the Cartier Vendome.
The dial has a gloss white base tone with shines subtly in the light. The date window is at 6 O’clock which is nicely balanced on the dial. The hour markers are roman numerals which are painted on to the dial with the dot markers for the minutes/seconds. The dial is signed Dunhill below 12 O’clock in the traditional font. The hour and minute hands are of sword style and are black painted, with the central second hand has a tapered design. The sapphire crystal is flat, with the bevelled edge.
The case is the largest size, measuring 36mm x 36mm with a lug-to-lug length of 44mm. It fits the wrist snugly with the 6.5mm depth. It is formed of Stainless Steel with a gold-plated finish. It has the satin brushed finish which adds subtlety to the case. The case is a unique piece of design from the 1980s, being circular, falling away to a single line, before curving back in along the same trajectory. It is shaped much like a flying saucer or a smooth button. The lugs are integrated into the case, sweeping up at the centre of the case with a single piece on the top and bottom. There is a neat and thin bezel capping around the dial, holding the crystal in place. To the right of the case is the original crown, with the helix knurled finish.
The case back is stainless steel with the brushed finish and engraved signing. It is signed Water resistant, Swiss Made Quartz, Dunhill, A/D, P7 10334 IQ. Inside it is signed Carrure + Lunette, Plaque or G 10, Stainless Steel.
The movement is an ETA 955.412. It is original, with the Dunhill signing. It is a 7-jewel quartz movement with a date indicator and central second hand. It has had a new battery fitted and is keeping accurate time, to within couple of seconds variation a month.
The watch comes on its original Dunhill leather strap.
