Here we a good original example of a 1980s Ebel Sport Classic 1911 ref 1134901 Chronograph watch, with the El Primero movement inside. It has the two-tone case with the brushed stainless-steel finish and the polished gold accents of the bezel and screws. It measures 39mm which is a good proportion. It has the white dial with the roman numerals and gold polished finish surrounding the sub-dials. The Tachymetre scale is around the outside of the dial. The silver polished hands are elegant with the luminous in-fill. It has the offset date function between 4-5 O’clock. It comes on its original bracelet, formed of steel with the 18ct accents. It is well sized and will fit up to an 8.5” wrist circumference. Inside is the Zenith calibre 400 movement which is marked as an Ebel 134. It is an excellent quality movement which is keeping time to within chronometer grade.
It comes with its outer box, inner leather casing, reference hang tag, instruction booklet and dealer list.
We think now is a good time to be adding this reference to your collection. From a value proposition they are A LOT of watch for the money when you consider the styling, build quality, the use of precious metal, and the the Hi-beat El Primero movement inside. The Ebel 1911 chronograph was more expensive than a Rolex Daytona in the 1990s, which used the same movement. With neo-vintage gaining traction in a big way, they will not remain this affordable for much longer.
The dial is clean and classic. The Tachymetre insert adds a depth to the dial, sitting around the outside and resting against the sapphire crystal. The dial is a white base tone, with the black roman numerals. The sub-dials are inset into the dial and framed by the gold polished finish. This is a neat touch, which creates a harmony between the use of the two-tones. The dial is signed with the ‘Ebel’ name below 12 O’clock. The date window is offset between 4 and 5 O’clock and blends into the dial well. The hands are simple and elegant in a silver tone with the luminous in-fill on the hours and minutes. The hands on the sub-dials all match and are neatly designed.
The case is well proportioned for any wrist size by modern tastes. With a case measuring 38mm and a relatively slim depth of 11mm, it is a sleek piece on the wrist. The additional width provided by the pushers and the lug length add presence.
The case design is eye-catching with the use of the non-conventional hexagonal shape. This particular bracelet also dove tails nicely with the case to provide more heft. The case has the satin brushed finish which grounds the case nicely, providing the contrast with the polished 18ct bezel, screws and crown. The lugs are short, rounded and subtly tapered, which is an interesting design that makes the case flow into the bracelet. The bracelet has 5 different sections per link, held in place by two short screws, an insanely complicated build method. The satin brushed outer links are both separate, with the gold striped accents also individual parts and the polished centre link sits between the two. The hidden clasp allows the two sides to blend seamlessly with the Ebel name signed. For extra security there is a bar clasp which is another interesting design element. It is a huge bonus that this is a full-length bracelet, capable of fitting up to an 8.5” wrist circumference. Links are hard to come by! The bracelet is specific to the model with the two screws holding it in place.
The case back snaps into place and is an unusual helmet shape, with the lip to the top for easy access. It has the satin brushed finish with the clear reference and serial number engraving.
If the overall design isn’t impressive enough, the movement powering this watch is one of the finest automatic chronograph movements ever produced. The watch is famed for its use of the Zenith El Primero calibre 400, re-branded as an Ebel calibre 134. It is an exceptionally well-made movement, with a jewel count of 31 and a hi-beat frequency of 36,000 BPH making the 60 second hand sweep smoothly around the dial. On the three sub-dials it has the constant seconds, 30 minute counter and 12 hour counter. It also has the quickset date function. It is in very good condition, keeping time to within -3 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 300 degrees and a beat error of 0.1m/s.
