For sale we have a very good example of a 1980 Garrard 9ct gold dress watch with retirement presentation. It comes with its original box and repair paperwork from the mid 1980s.

 

This is a classic dress watch with a circular case is formed of 9ct gold. It measures 33.5mm x 33.5mm with a lug-to-lug measurement of 40.5mm. The lugs are thin and are of a straight design. The case has a polished finish which is in good condition. The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It has the personal engraving: “Presented by Unigate Limited to T.H. Nicholas for 25 years loyal service 1980”. Inside it has British hallmarking for 9ct gold by Birmingham assay office, with the date letter “E”.

 

The dial is a classic dress dial, simple and elegant. It is a silver base tone with a satin sunburst finish. It is a lovely simplistic dial in excellent condition. There are dash minute markers around the exterior, with applied baton hour markers with black paint to the centre. These have applied Tritium lume plots to the base which has developed a lovely orange tone and adds texture to the dial. It is signed Garrard below 12 O’clock with Swiss Movement below 6 O’clock.

 

The hands are original and are of stick style with a facetted centre. The original Tritium lume is intact and has aged to a lovely deep yellow tone. The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish.

 

The movement is an ETA 2801-1. It is a manual wind movement with sweep second hand. It has a jewel count of 17, a power reserve of 46 hours and a power reserve of 28,800 BPH. It has perlage finishing to the bridge plate.

 

The service history is unknown, however the movement is in good condition keeping very good time. It has a daily gain of +8 seconds, with an amplitude of 260 degrees and a beat error of 0.0m/s.

Dial:

The dial is in very good original condition. It is a silver base tone with a satin sunburst finish. It is a lovely simplistic dial in excellent condition. There are simple minute markers around the exterior, with applied baton hour markers with black paint to the centre. The hands are original. They are of stick style with a facetted centre. They are in excellent condition and have lume in-fill. The original Tritium lume is intact and has aged to a lovely deep yellow tone.

 

Glass:

The acrylic crystal is a replacement and is in good condition with no marking.

 

Crown:

The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish. It has some light surface scratches but is in good condition.

 

Case:

The circular case is formed of 9ct gold and is in good condition. It has light surface scratching consistent with age. The case has a polished finish. The lugs are thin and are of a straight design.

 

Caseback:

The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is in good condition, with surface scratching consistent with ageing. It has a polished finish to the outside, with a brushed finish to the main face. It has the personal engraving: “Presented by Unigate Limited to T.H. Nicholas for 25 years loyal service 1980”. Inside it has British hallmarking for 9ct gold by Birmingham assay office, with the date letter “E”.

 

Strap:

The strap is genuine leather and is an 18mm lug width. It will fit from a up to an 8 inch wrist diameter.
