Here we have a beautiful neo-vintage mid 1990s Eterna-Matic Kontiki 1856 Diver watch. It is the reference 1400.41 which is seldom seen. It is notable for being the worlds thinnest automatic diver watch, with a case depth of just 8mm. It also has the bonus of the officially certified Chronometer movement with its 200m water resistance. The stainless-steel case measures 39mm with the polished finishing. It has the screw down crown, which is protected by the crown guard. It has the steel bezel with the black aluminium uni-directional count up insert. Set within the bezel is the sapphire crystal. The dial has the matte black finish with the Tritium luminous hour markers and dash minute track. The hands have the matching Tritium luminous in-fill with white painted ends. The date window sits at 3 O’clock. The screw back has the Kontiki motif and inside is the ETA 2892-2 movement which is chronometer grade and has been recently serviced. It is presented on its original steel bracelet with divers extension.
The matte black dial has the raised chapter ring to the edges with the detailed single second and 1/5th seconds dashes. The hour markers are of arrow design, with the baton markers at 3, 6 and 9 and a triangular marker to differentiate 12 O’clock. They are raised, with the tritium T25 (radioactive radiation 25 mCi) which has aged to a dark cream tone and has the rippled texture. The date window has the bevelled edge which leads to the silver tone wheel with the black Arabic numerals. The dial is signed below 12 O’clock with the Eterna-Matic logo and name. Above 6 O’clock it has the Chronometer signing and the 200m depth rating. Either side of 6 O’clock it is signed ‘Swiss -T 25-‘. The hands are of index style with the white painted outer section and the Tritium luminous in-fill. The base of the hands is black painted to match the dial and create a floating appearance. The second hand has the eye-catching luminous lollipop design. The tritium luminous still glows, but it is shortlived with the half life of 12.32 years.
The case is well proportioned measuring 39mm x 39mm, with the crown guard taking the width to just under 40mm and the crown 42.5mm. The dog leg lugs downturn to make the 44.5mm lug-to-lug length fit the wrist nicely. With a maximum depth of 9mm, the case is a beautifully low profile, making it the world’s thinnest automatic diver.
A steamlined case design is aided by the use of polished finishing. The lugs are lightly tapered with the slight downturn and dog leg end to meet the wrist. The sides dish inwards to ensure the watch sits comfortably on the wrist. The bezel is a classic steel count up uni-directional design, with the black aluminium insert up to 60 minutes. To the right is the swooping crown guard which follow the flow of the case. This protects the signed screw down crown, which enables the 200m water resistance. The dial is protected by the sapphire crystal which has the anti-reflective coating. The case back has the 6 notches to unscrew and is in good condition with the brushed finish. The centre has the Kontiki motif to the centre which is well defined. It is signed with the reference 1400.41. Inside it is marked with the full reference 629.1400.41S.
The movement is a well decorated ETA 2892-2, which is an automatic Chronometer grade movement. It has a hi-beat frequency of 28,800 BPH and a jewel count of 21. It benefits from detached manual wind and hacking seconds. It has the quickset date function.
The watch is presented on its original reference 1400 Steel bracelet. It has the brushed main links with the polished double band to the centre. It has the folding safety clasp with the divers extension. The clasp is signed with the Eterna logo. It will fit up to a 7.75” wrist circumference without divers extension.
We see this as the perfect neo-vintage diver, combining a super thin design and the warmth of Tritium luminous, with the quality of more modern watchmaking provided by the Chronometer grade movement.
