For sale we have a 1980s Gucci Quartz tank watch, reference 4200M. It has a beautiful lemon tone dial, with a unique design with black in-fill Roman Numerals on the bezel as the hour markers. The case measures 24.5mm wide, with elegant lines and rounded corners. This is an incredibly comfortable watch, measuring 32mm lug-to-lug, with a depth of just 5mm. This is such an underrated trait with dress watches, allowing you to almost forget you are wearing a watch. To the right-hand side is the signed crown, with the dual G. The bezel is stepped, with facetted corners, having the engraved Roman numerals, with black in-fill. At 12 O’clock is the Gucci branding, with the famous dual G’s above 6 O’clock.
A lovely flat crystal sits above the lemon tone dial. The black dauphine style hands provide a considered contrast against the dial, tying in with the hour markers and signing.
The snap on case back has the reference number and further Gucci motif engraved.
Inside is the recently fitted ETA 901.001 movement, which ensures perfect timekeeping.
Guccio Gucci founded the House of Gucci in Florence in 1906, with his first boutique opening in Rome in 1938. After Guccios death in 1953, the business was left to his son, Aldo. Forward thinking and entrepreneurial, Aldo expanded the brand, opening more boutiques in London, Paris, New York and Toyko. Gucci were widely seen as one of the largest retailers of luxury goods, until the late 1970s when the company was at the brink of bankruptcy after multiple poor business decisions and in fighting, depicted in the House of Gucci film.
In 1972, Gucci began to produce watches, becoming the first fashion house to do so. They settled in the famous watchmaking city, La Chaux-de-Fonds. The watches they created there were an immediate hit, with the quality of the pieces and the eye Gucci had for design. Their first watch, the model 2000 Gucci watch, earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1974, when they broke the record for selling more than one million units in two years.
With a swell of interest in neo-vintage designs, as well as Gucci’s more recent development of extraordinary Haute Horlogerie time pieces, we see this reference as stylish and timeless tank, of great quality, at an affordable price.
