Here we have rarely seen model of Seiko Quartz, dating from January of 1982. It is the reference 8222-5130 which has a pleasing use of stainless steel with gold tone accents. The silver brushed dial has the gold tone striping in a central band, with the top and bottom of the bezel having a gold accent. This extends onto the bracelet with gold tone centre bands between the steel links. The case is the classic 1980s tonneau design, with the original bracelet blending seamlessly with the head of the watch. The bezel has a polished finish which neatly frames the dial, with the front of the case having a satin brushed finish which extends onto the bracelet. The sides have a polished finish which reflects the light nicely.
The integrated styling and use of the two-tone colours and finishing makes this watch a joy on the wrist.
The case back snaps into place and has the Seiko signing with the reference 8222-5130. It is marked as being formed of Stainless Steel with the gold-plated accents.
The movement is Seiko Quartz calibre 8222A. It is a reliable Quartz calibre with a quickset date function. It is functioning well, having recently had a new battery fitted.
It has the personal engraving to the rear “To Leo on your retirement from all at Penarves Mine.”
Pendarves mine history:
Wheal Pendarves was located 1 mile to the south of Camborne, near Troon. It was a product of the 1960s resurgence of interest in Cornish Tin. There had been extensive, but largely unproductive, mining in the area through the 19th century, all of which had closed by the 1870s. One of the productive lodes was the Tryphena Lode and in the 1960s exploration was carried out by Camborne Tin Ltd.
The results were sufficiently encouraging for Simms Shaft to be sunk in 1967, making it the first new shaft sunk in 40 years. Some limited mining was undertaken on a trial basis in 1972 until early 1973 when the company went into receivership.
In June of 1973, it was purchased by Great Western Ores Ltd, a subsidiary of South Crofty Ltd. Production was built up to around 40,000 tonnes per annum, but the conditions were very difficult and in 1984 it was announced the mine would go on to care and maintenance, pending results of an extensive drilling programme. Carnon Consolidated purchased the mine and although exploration was still a priority, the mine would be continued in operation, for modest levels of production.
Simms shaft was sunk to a depth of 260 metres, with the shaft being rectangular, rather than the more typical circular shape. It went down to level 5 and in 1976 the shaft was sunk by 10 metres to allow development of a 6th level. In 1981 it was sunk to level 7 which has a working depth of 305 metres. Most production came from level 5 and above, with the Tryphena load proving poor on the lower levels.
It was a wet mine, which pumped 1-1.5 million gallons of water out per day, from level 5. The weak walls and water meant that the broken ore was a sludge, which created handling problems at every stage.
In 1984 the mine was close to closure, having run out of developed ore reading for stoping. The tin price crash of 1985 led to Pendarves being one of the first casualties, with the mine closing.
