Here we have an uncommon example of a 1959 Omega Seamaster Automatic watch. It is a rare and heavy 18ct gold Dennison case, made in England. The case back alone weighs 12.2g. It has a beautiful patinated, original dial with the dished design and unusual facetted arrow hour markers. It is signed with the Omega name and logo, with the ‘Seamaster’ model name. It has a neat 34mm case with the beefy lug design. To the right it has the signed Omega Clover crown. The rear has the polished finish and inside it is signed with the Omega name, Dennison branding and British hallmarking. The movement is an Omega cal 501 automatic movement. It is keeping reliable after a recent service. The watch is presented on a Hirsch leather strap with the Omega gold plated buckle.
The dial is a clean and classic design with its silver tone. The satin finish has the light speckled patination which is good and even. The dished finish to the dial is excellent with the flat central section and the outer section falling away. This adds depth and intrigue to the design. Another excellent touch are the claw hour markers which have a facetted finish, following the flow of the dials edge. This catches the light and is a rarely seen style. The addition of the double markers at 12,3,6 and 9 adds a balance to the dial.
It has the simple dash minute/second markers to the edge of the central section. The dial is simply signed with ‘Omega’ and ‘Automatic’ with the gold tone applied logo below 12. Above 6 O’clock it is signed with the ‘Seamaster’ name with the classic font.
The hands are of Dauphine style in a rose gold tone. They have a speckled ageing which matches the ageing of the dial. The central second hand is original with the tapered finish.
The case is a classic, well-proportioned dress watch. It measures 34mm x 34mm. The straight beefy lugs add presence, taking the total lug-to-lug measurement to 41.5mm. It has a depth of 11.5mm which gives it a good depth on the wrist.
It is formed of 18ct yellow gold and has a three-piece construction with the snap-on front and rear to the central section with the lugs. It has a polished bezel with the bevelled design, leading to the flat sides of the case with the brushed finish. The lugs are the classic ‘Beefy’ design of the period with adds character to the case. To the right is the beautiful Clover style crown with the Omega logo. The case back has the polished exterior with the British hallmarking for 18ct gold the inside from Birmingham assay office. It is signed with the Dennison name, as a well as the Omega logo. It is marked with ‘Pat. Applied for, fit washer in back’.
The movement is an Omega calibre 501 which is an automatic movement, with a jewel count of 20. It has a 46-hour power reserve with a frequency of 19,800 BPH. It has the beautiful rose gold tone finishing, which is in good condition, with a good shine. The movement has been recently serviced. It’s keeping time to within - 13 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 300 degrees and a beat error of 1.1m/s.
It comes on a good Hirsch leather strap with the gold-plated Omega big logo buckle, which is pleasing to see.
The dished dial design, claw hour markers and heavy 18ct Dennison case make this a real collectors piece.
